I often find guest rooms one of the most fun spaces to work with in a house. They don’t typically need to serve too many functions or need a lot of storage, and people tend to be more adventurous with patterns and colors as it’s not a space they spend too much time in. Instead, many clients want their guest rooms to have a bit of a wow factor (similar to powder rooms), and be a hotel-like retreat for their guests. Our Greenlake client was one of these people, and we worked with her to turn this sparse and dated guest room into a soothing and luxurious retreat for her guests. She did not want to make any major renovations to the space so we worked with the existing flooring and room dimensions. As you can tell from the picture, it was pretty far from being a hotel like retreat!

The design plan worked with a monochromatic grey palette but brought in interest with luxurious textures and finishes. The room was instantly transformed with just a coat of paint. Grey paint from Benjamin Moore was applied to the lower parts of the wall and the closet doors, and was also used to stencil the upper wall. A glossy pale pink paint added a subtle pop of color to the ceiling.

As the room was quite small in size and had very limited natural lighting, we incorporated multiple reflective surfaces and sleek furniture such as the mirrored nightstands with hidden storage , washable silk quilt, semi gloss paint and iconic ghost chair. We also added in multiple textures with the cowhide pillows, the linen bedframe, silk and hide rug, wool shades, and cashmere throw to add interest and prevent the room from becoming a disco ball!

To complete the hotel feel of the room, we added in the most amazing piece from fashion photographer Jvdas Berra. The large scale print makes such a statement on the wall! We accessorized the nightstands with items that would be useful to a guest, such as books to read, a carafe and glass for drinking water at night, a box to place jewelry or watches, and some guest toiletries. We loved how it turned out, and wouldn’t mind staying there for a couple of nights!
