A couple of weeks ago, I had the chance to visit the Yayoi Kusama Infinity mirrors exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum. I was not really sure what to expect, but it was an incredible and immersive experience!
The exhibit showcases Kusama’s signature dot and mirror motifs, as well as her use of soft tubular phallic sculptures which she first started experimenting with to help conquer her fear of sex. The Seattle exhibit consists of a selection of her key artworks such as sculptures and paintings, and a series of six immersive rooms.
The mirrored infinity rooms were definitely my favorite, really playing with space, sculpture, and light.
The Dots Obsession room contrasted large polka dot balloons in a room with micro balloons within a large polka dot balloon serving as the room.
The Obliteration room was a fun communal activity, where visitors applied colorful dot stickers to a white room filled with white furniture and accessories. It seemed very in line with the artist’s early work with polka dots and polka dot performance pieces.
This is definitely one of those exhibits I’d recommend seeing if you get the chance.
